A house and studio for visual artist and his family in the south of Iceland.
The site is in the barren and arid landscape at the roots of Mt. Hekla. The project consists of a main house, a bedroom wing, a studio with mezzanine and a guest house. These program elements are formally organized around a communal courtyard. The orientation of the complex and wall openings are set to frame key views on the horizon, harness the wind and create sheltered spaces for outdoor activities. Primary construction is timber and steel frame and exterior cladding is vertical redwood cedar. The cedar gradually developes an even silvery patina allowing the construct to assimilate with the natural colours of the surrounding landscape.
